Excused and Unexcused Absences

Excused Absences

APS students are allowed no more than 5 unexcused absences per semester, and no more than 10 unexcused absences per school year. It is the parent/guardian responsibility to notify the school each day that the student will be absent, in accordance with the notification procedure established  by the school.
Absences may be excused for the following reasons, with appropriate documentation:
  • Doctor appointment
  • Death in the family (3 per year)
  • Religious commitment
  • Illness (4.5-9 for the school year)
  • Family Emergency IE: Car accident, hospital emergencies (2 per year)
  • Diagnostic testing
  • School visit

Unexcused Absences

NOT CALLED INTO ATTENDANCE: In the event that Eisenhower attendance office has not received notification of absence by a parent or guardian, the school will mark the students absence unexcused.

EXCESSIVE EXCUSED ABSENCES: Excessive absences will be marked unexcused and request for further documentation will be required for further absences.  Documentation must be from student's physician and will be placed in the students file.
FAMILY VACATIONS: Albuquerque Public Schools district policy is that family vacations should be taken during periods of time when school is not in session.
FAMILY EVENTS: Weddings & graduations are considered unexcused.
NON-ACADEMIC EVENTS: Sporting events, theatrical events, and other non-academic extracurricular activities are considered unexcused.  
ARRIVING LATE TO SCHOOL: Student has missed the bus, slept in, alarm did not go off are all considered unexcused.  Students cannot sign themselves in past 8:35 a.m. without documentation from appointment or parent stating why they are late to school.  If your student walks to school, carpools, or is dropped off late and has missed half of the class period it will be recorded unexcused absence.
If you call your student in late and do not give a reason it will be marked unexcused.
